Ramos-Horta recalls assassination attempt
East Timor's President Jose Ramos-Horta fought back tears today as he thanked staff at Royal Darwin Hospital for saving his life after last month's assassination attempt in Dili.
Mr Ramos-Horta presented staff at the hospital with gifts, including East Timorese coffee and a signed photograph of himself and Pope Benedict.
He also spoke for the first time about what it was like to be shot and enduring a painful bumpy ride to hospital.
He said he remembered lying in pain, in a pool of blood.
Mr Ramos-Horta has now left hospital to continue his recovery at a Darwin home.
He says his medical treatment has been top class from the moment he arrived.
"I'm very, very happy, particularly very grateful to the Darwin hospital, to the nurses, to the doctors, to the cleaners," he said.
"I was very, very well looked after here from the moment I arrived. I thank also the Australian Defence Force medical centre in Dili."
The President is expected to return to East Timor in a few weeks.
